Integrating Complex Events for Collaborating and Dynamically Changing Business Processes

Abstract: Business processes must become agile, respond to changes in the business environment in a timely manner and quickly adapt themselves to new conditions. Event-Driven Business Process Management (ED-BPM) is an enhancement of Business Process Management (BPM) by concepts of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Complex Event Processing (CEP). The most important enhancement is the integration of services accessible via the Internet that fire events into global event clouds. The events can be processed by event processing platforms for aggregating the information into higher value complex business events. These events can be modeled in a business process execution language within a process driven Business Process Management System (BPMS) to trigger changes in control flow of a process or start other services. A reference model and a reference architecture for ED-BPM are presented, based on the NEXOF Reference Architecture. A taxonomy for classifying changes to process flow is proposed. Enhancements have to be applied to the existing standards in the BPM field, including both the design-time and the runtime. A scenario from the banking domain illustrates the main concepts and principles.

The 5th Event Processing Symposium will take place in Trento, in September 21-23, 2009. This international event gathers most of the major academic and industrial players in the area, and is organized under the auspices of the Event Processing Technical Society (EPTS).

The event is organized by dbTrento, the Databases and Information Management group of the University of Trento. The host and local arrangements coordinator is the EPTS member Themis Palpanas.

Proceedings will be published by Springer Verlag

Chaired by:

Avigdor Gal, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology

Sharma Chakravarthy, University of Texas at Arlington, US

About ODBASE

The conference on Ontologies, DataBases, and Applications of Semantics for Large Scale Information Systems (ODBASE'09) provides a forum on the use of ontologies and data semantics in novel applications. Of particular relevance to ODBASE 2009 are papers that bridge traditional boundaries between disciplines such as databases, networking, mobile systems, artificial intelligence, information retrieval, and computational linguistics. We also encourage the submission of research and practical experience papers concerning scale issues in ontology management, information integration, and data mining, as well as papers that examine the information needs of various applications.

This year, in addition to its traditional focus on the management of semantically-rich information, ODBASE will have a special theme on "Semantics in Complex Event Processing."

We encourage submissions in areas that connect semantics with event processing and sub-pub systems. ODBASE'09 intends to draw a highly diverse body of researchers and practitioners by being part of the Federated conferences Event "On the Move to Meaningful Internet Systems 2009 (OnTheMove'09)" that co-locates five conferences: ODBASE'09, DOA'09 (International Symposium on Distributed Objects and Applications), CoopIS'09 (International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems), GADA'09 (International Conference on Grid computing, high-performAnce and Distributed Applications), and IS'09 (International Symposium on Information Security).

ODBASE 2009 will consider two categories of papers: research and experience. Research papers must contain novel, unpublished results. Experience papers must describe existing, real-world scale systems; preference will be given to papers that describe software products or systems that are in wide experimental use.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Specific areas of interest to ODBASE'09 include but are not limited to:
