19th June, 2009 - "Berlin Semantic Web Day" at Freie Universität Berlin Topic of the Berlin Semantic Web Day is Semantic Business Process Management (SBPM) which is the combination of Corporate Semantic Web technologies, such as rules, events and ontologies, with BPM. This unique combination promises enhanced automation in discovery, configuration and composition of appropriate process components, information objects, and services, as well as automated mediation between different heterogeneous interfaces and abstraction levels, targeted complex queries on the process space and flow, and in general much more agile business process management. Click here for the program or to register. The public series of lectures on "Semantic Business Process Management" at the FU Berlin comprises three lectures on "standards at DIN e.V." by DIN e.V., "Semantic Business Process Management" by Semtation and "Rule-based and CEP-based Business Process Management" by Tibco. In the morning there will be the next public STI / CSW PhD Workshop, with a guest presentation by Dr. Boris Petkoff (AccordSystems) and in the evening, starting with keynote by Duane Nickull, Adobe Systems, the second Berlin Semantic Web Meetup will take place at the FU Berlin. In parallel to this public track there will be a special industry training about "Applications of Corporate Semantic Web in Industry" at the Campus Seminaris Hotel provided by the AG Corporate Semantic Web (CSW) and the Semantic Web Company (SWC). |

The EPTS 4th Event Processing Symposium (and first since the official EPTS launch) took place in September 17-19, 2008 at Stamford, CT, USA.
The attendance was high (even with some overflow on the designated slots due to demand), with participants from vendors, academic, customers, analysts, and independent consultants. The presentations are available to registered users in the Downloads section of this website .
The program included four keynote addresses:
- A VC perspective on Event Processing
- The perspective of the value of Event Processing to a customer
- From the perspective of research directions
- From the perspective of Standards
The symposium contained a review and assessment of the event processing discipline from all aspects – where it is now, and where it is going, and encouraged discussions in various topics, which took the form of panels and discussions among the participants. It was a great opportunity to network and engage in coopetition.
On the last day, the business meeting took place and resulted in proposals for a total of nine work-groups (two of them are continuation of work-groups that started in the pre-EPTS era). These work-groups will proceed through an approval process so there is a chance that not all proposals will result in the formation of a work-group. But I am hugely encouraged by the fact that nine work-groups have been proposed as this is a huge step-up in EPTS activities, and hopefully impact on the evolving EP discipline.
I would like to thank the participants, the panelists, the speakers, and especially the symposium sponsors:
- Gartner (main sponsor)
- Aleri and Event Zero for coffees and lunch
- IBM who handled the registration for the conference
I wish everybody fruitful participation in the EPTS activities, and look forward to seeing you in further meetings.
Opher Etzion
EPTS Steering Committee Chair.
